Most people come to me with an IRONMAN dream and no idea where to start.

Rob WilbyHead coach, Team Oxygenaddict

You’ve entered the race, or you’re about to. You’re looking at a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile ride and a marathon, and wondering how anyone fits the training for that around a job and a family.

Maybe you’ve already started, squeezing in 15 or 20 hour weeks because that’s what you’ve heard the pros do, and you’re exhausted before the real training has begun.

Or you’re fitting in five or six hours around the kids and wondering if you’re already behind.

Either way, you might be wondering whether IRONMAN is for someone like you, or whether it’s just a crazy, unrealistic dream.

About a quarter of the people who enter an IRONMAN don’t make it to the finish line.

Make sure you’re not one of them.

These are three of the more than 1,000 first-timers I’ve coached to the finish. They stopped trying to work it out alone, and went from wondering if they could to crossing the finish line, with training that fitted around the rest of their lives.

Where to begin... at the beginning, with no triathlon experience, unable to swim more than 50m without being absolutely gassed, and never having ridden more than 30 miles on a bike.

The training plan has transformed me.

No swimming, cycling or running since childhood.

The start of my training looked like Swim 25m stop for 2mins get my breath and swim back. My run was run 30 strides walk 30 strides.

Anyway I made it home and enjoyed the moment and became an IRONMAN.

I finished it, I actually managed to complete an Ironman, not even when I first said to my wife that I wanted to do an Ironman for my 40th did I really think I could get to the finish line […] with a full time job, wife, 2 children under 7, a dog and being an on call firefighter.

There are four worries nearly every first-timer brings to me.

Team Oxygenaddict will get you past all four, and on race day you’ll be running down the finishing chute with your arms in the air and a huge smile on your face.

How do I fit IRONMAN training around my week?

A plan built around your normal week

Before I write any sessions, we talk through your race, the fitness and experience you’re starting from, and the hours you have in a normal week. What matters is that you can make room for seven to nine in most weeks as your build goes on.

Your plan lives in TrainingPeaks, the leading training app for endurance athletes. Every session syncs automatically to your watch or bike computer, so you always know exactly what to do, how hard to go and why it’s there.

You getYour own plan in TrainingPeaks, designed around your work, your family and everything else that matters to you

What happens when life gets in the way?

Tell me what’s come up and I’ll adjust your week

The plan I write for you rarely stays the way I wrote it for long, and keeping it achievable is a big part of what I do. Work explodes, a child gets ill, you’re away for a week at short notice.

When it happens you let me know, I sort out the week and you carry on, because deciding what to drop is my job. You hand the thinking and the worry over to me, so all your effort and energy can go into getting the best training done. Even in a week where you only manage two sessions, they’ll have been the right two, and you’ll finish the week confident that you’ve made the absolute best of whatever training time you had.

You getA plan that fits around your life, however much it changes

Just to give some faith to anyone worrying about niggles, sickness or interruptions to training: Rob instilled confidence with every setback and got me to the start line!

Am I on track to finish?

One score that tells you where you stand

It’s Sunday night. Work was mad, you’ve missed two sessions, and you’re wondering if your race is slipping away. Your watch has hundreds of numbers, and none of them can tell you.

Your Race Ready score can. It shows you that one rough week has barely moved you and your fitness is still there, so you can stop worrying and get on with next week.

And when your score is 75% or more going into race day, you can stand on that start line knowing you’re ready for a great race.

You getYour Race Ready score, every week of your build

My Race Ready score was pretty much always above 90% for the 6 months leading into Barcelona.

It way surpassed my “best day” expectations.

Who do I turn to for advice?

Me, as often as you need

You get your own private coaching space where you can message me as often as you like, and we aim to reply within 24 hours. Send me the small stuff: a niggle, a session that didn’t feel right, a wobble at ten o’clock at night. It’s all easier to sort while it’s small.

Before a big session or a key week I’ll often message you first, and if you go quiet, I’ll notice and get in touch. I also host group video calls several times a month, where you can drop in and talk anything through with me face to face.

Hi Sam, your race is 11 days away, so let’s pull your race-day plan together. Start it here and we’ll go through it.

I could not be more thankful to the TOA environment, the complex combination of tech, coaching weekly reports and feedback and human encouragement that has been the mainstay of my last 9 months.

Can you do this on your own?

You could, but would you know it was the right training?

We hear it from people who’ve trained alone. They’ve given every spare minute of a year to swimming, cycling and running, a lot of it was guesswork, and on race morning they still don’t know whether they’re ready to finish.

A plan from a book, a download or random advice you’ve seen on social media doesn’t know your week.

An app will shuffle a missed session, but it can’t ask whether you missed it because a child was ill or because your knee’s been sore. Those need completely different weeks after them, and getting that wrong is how a niggle turns into an injury that ends your race.

When you’ve handed that thinking over to me, you’ll often train fewer hours than you expected, and because every session has counted, you get to the start line confident you can finish.

I am also 100% sure that in my pre‑TOA days I would have folded at some point and not made it to the start line this year.

But having a clear, sensible, laid-out training plan kept me going, and I actually found I needed the certainty of it during the worst times.

What Team Oxygenaddict athletes wrote after race day…

I don’t think I’ve done anything amazing, I’ve just followed the training programme.

Bit of background, I joined TOA last year to help fulfil an ambition to celebrate being 70 by doing my first Ironman.

The TOA approach was perfect for me, I had confidence in the plan outlined by Rob and I knew if I did extra work on S&C, Yoga and nutrition I could give it a good shot.

Just a few of the athletes I’ve coached to an IRON-distance finish.

Everything you’ll have on your side, all the way to the finish line.

    • Your planTraining designed around your work, your family and everything else that matters, so every session fits your week and moves you closer to the finish. It’s all in TrainingPeaks and syncs to your watch, so you always know what to do and how hard to go.
    • Changes when life happensWhen work or family knocks a week over, tell me and I’ll rework it. You hand me the thinking and the worry, so your energy goes into the training and a messy week doesn’t derail your build.
    • Race ReadyA score every week that shows how your training measures up to what your race will ask of you, so you know you’re on track instead of guessing.
    • Your coaching spaceMessage me as often as you like in your private coaching space (we aim to reply within 24 hours), so a niggle or a wobble gets sorted while it’s small, before it costs you training.
    • Group callsVideo calls with me several times a month, where you can talk anything through face to face and hear how other athletes are handling the same things.
    • Your race-day planYour bike power, run pace, fuelling and hydration, planned with me before the day and with the fuelling practised in training, so on race morning you know exactly how you’ll get to the finish.

    3. If it is, you can join there and then, and we get you set up on the call. Most athletes are training on their new plan within 48 hours.

I only take on a small number of new athletes each month. If you can see a time in the calendar, there’s a place available, and booking holds it for you.

Choose a time that suits you

Calls with Rob take about 30 minutes, by video.

    Is this for you?

This will work for you if

    • you’ll commit to following the training I design for you
    • you can make room for seven to nine hours most weeks as your build goes on, and for a few bigger weeks in the last couple of months before your race
    • you’ll talk to me openly and honestly about the good, the bad and the ugly of your training. The athletes who get the best results are the ones who do, and there’s no judgement, so nothing is too small or too awkward to tell me
    • the people supporting you through this are happy with the hours and the cost
    • you’re ready to start in the next week or two

It won’t work for you if

    • you’d rather do whatever session you fancy each day. Trusting the plan, even on the days you’d rather do something else, is the foundation everything else is built on
    • you think more training is always the answer
    • you’d keep a bad week to yourself rather than tell me how it really went
    • the people supporting you aren’t on board yet
    • a full IRONMAN isn’t what you’re working towards in the next 12 to 24 months
